Attracting and retaining the best talent at work requires more than just good pay and expensive perks. If a professional is good at what they do, they can get a tidy salary and nice benefits from a number of potential employers.

In the modern workplace, the employee experience is what attracts top talent and keeps them around. In order to build and retain a workforce that goes above and beyond set objectives and key results, companies may need to adjust their workplace strategies.

This isn’t to say that things like pay and reward programs don’t make a difference, but today’s workers are much more likely to consider how they feel about the company and overall work experience. In a 2017 report from SHRM, 68% of respondents said that respectful treatment of employees was very important for job satisfaction. That was followed by compensation and trust between employees and senior management which were both at 61%.

If you are looking to create a positive employee experience that will improve job satisfaction and engagement for years to come, there are a few points to consider. In this post, we are going to look at the three factors that can have the biggest impact on the employee experience throughout the duration of their time at your company.

 

Physical Environment

The physical environment has a major influence on staff productivity and engagement. If the office is dark, messy, and drab, it is going to have a negative impact. You want to create a space that is inviting and make it somewhere that people actually want to spend their time. Consider redesigning the floor plan, hanging some art, and trying to find ways to introduce more natural light into the work environment.

Company Culture

Your company is going to develop a culture whether you cultivate one or not. If you want a positive workplace culture that promotes a healthy environment, it is something that needs to be done intentionally.

As a leader, you need to define the values that you want the company to uphold. If you want a positive work culture, you should promote things like open communication, trust, accountability, teamwork, and healthy workplace relationships. Leaders should also encourage feedback now and regularly in the future from employees and be supportive when team members express their opinions.

Technology

Depending on the company, you might use any number of different technologies to help the business operate. This technology can have a significant impact on how employees communicate, how they access information, and how they interact with management.

As a leader, you should make sure your employees have all of the software they need to facilitate their work. Additionally, you should never stick with a tech solution just because it is what you have always used. You should consider any program or device that can make the employee experience better or improve operations at the company in both the present time and future instances.

By managing these three factors, you can build a better employee experience that lasts well into the future of your business. In an age where employers need to set themselves apart by more than just money and benefits, the employee experience can be an important difference-maker when it comes to attracting new talent and improving engagement and job satisfaction.
